Another Great McKenzie Hike August 2011

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

On August 14th & 15th 2011, Larry & Ramona returned to the beautiful Sisters/McKenzie River area for another hike.

We started off at Sisters Oregon this time, stopped and took a few pictures of a wild deer in a farmer’s field, then went west over the McKenzie Pass, stopping at the Dee Wright Observatory. What a spectacular view of the lava beds and many of the Cascade peaks! After an hour or so there, we continued west and stopped at the Hand Lake trail head. We hiked into the lake and shot some nice pictures, then back to the car and down to Aunt Pat & Uncle Don’s for a rest and great meal. My 2nd cousin Zoey and her friend Mya were there so we got to do some fishing on the McKenzie again. Then on Monday we went back up the McKenzie and drove south of McKenzie Bridge up Horse Creek Road to a very rugged area. The road wasn’t very well maintained, but we eventually made it to the trail head. We only got about a half mile into our 3 mile (round trip) hike before the trail vanished. Apparently the USFS hasn’t made it up there to clear the trail yet this year. Still, it was pretty high (6500 feet) and we got some more nice pictures before returning to our relatives for some more rest and wonderful food.
